WHAT IS YOUR JOB? TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

I have a clothing brand called Molly Perkinsons which I design, make and dispatch all from my brothers garage here in Mount Maunganui.

WHAT DOES A NORMAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

I really don’t have much of a routine. I just take each day as it comes. Some days I spend 2 hours in the studio and sometimes I’m in there so long I don’t even see the sunshine. If the juices are flowing I make the most of it but I don’t try and squeeze it out. 3 things I try to do every day are: get outside, read a bit and floss my teeth. Little important things.

WHERE DOES YOUR INSPIRATION FOR MOLLY COME FROM?

I spend ALOT of time looking at vintage garments and lingerie online. That’s where I get a lot of my inspiration for detailing. I also source my fabrics and trims all over the place. Some are vintage bits, some are end of lines or a handful of buttons from the local fabric shop. If I see something I like I get it and then that informs the garment! I think of things that I want in my wardrobe! I’m limited to what I can get my hands on and make here in my little garage studio and that’s the challenge.

WHAT FOOD CAN YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT?

I drink about 10 cups of tea a day and I’m sure I could get by on that if I had to. Although I love cooking, I’m best at making a good cup of tea.

WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO?

Pop Crimes curated a Spotify playlist for Molly, featuring all female artists, and that’s been on the daily! Have a listen HERE

WHAT ARE YOU READING?

I’ve just finished a book called “Vagina” about the science and history surrounding female sexuality. I'm about to start a new one on male sexuality.

FAVE MEAL MADE/BAKED DURING LOCKDOWN?

Ooh there’s been so many good ones… hand pulled noodles, fresh pasta, lots of slow cooks.

My brother finally shared his secret recipe for the best focaccia bread and I’ve made that quite a few times!

Other faves include Eat Lit Food's mac & cheese, Matt Bidois' butter chicken & Burgers by Lex by my flatmate Paddy.

WHAT WERE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST AFTER GETTING OUT OF LOCKDOWN?

Above anything else I just wanted to bask in the presence of the people I love. I couldn’t wait to give my friends some real life, tangible lovin’ and cook for them the food I’d learnt to make.

WHO ARE SOME LOCAL LEGENDS YOU ARE SUPPORTING?

I really love a coffee from Luca

But, the best food in town comes from my brothers house. He’s a very talented chef and has taught me most of what I know. He and his wife are the local legends behind No Biggie Food and Lucky Lucky Noodle. So I don’t have to go far! And, they are supporting me. Shout out to them.
